In recent years I've made multiple attempts at explaining to my son, the virtues of telling certain lies. No easy task after drilling in the evils and consequences of lying throughout the formative years. The issue invariably pops up during the annual Christmas thank-you writing session, the deadline for which is the day before school resumes after vacation. That would be today. There's only one gift that requires a creative touch this year. As usual, Grandpa's a little out of touch with the age-appropriateness of toys. I reminded my son that it was the thought that mattered and to be gracious in his note. Wow! "Dear Grandpa, Thank you for my.....It was really fun to build it. I even built it all by myself. It was really fun to play with after building it. Thank you for thinking of me." I only hope Grandpa isn't lulled into getting another one for his birthday. I am so grateful to have a thoughtful child and only hope that I too, am blessed with his compassion in my own twilight years.
