Before my grandmother died, she gave me a small assortment of riding trophies, won by my father, uncle and aunt when they were children. These have been tucked away in storage for some time.
None of the cups or plates had been engraved with the winner's names (it seems my grandmother never got around to that bit of business) but judging by the marked dates, I could deduce whose awards they were.
Two years ago I reconnected with my uncle's children, first cousins that I had not seen in 40 years. We were reminiscing about grandma's "trophy" room - really a small butler's pantry but filled with silver. My cousin mentioned that she did not have any of her father's trophy's. When I returned home, I sent her one of the plates.
I then noticed that two of the smaller cups, tucked inside larger unmarked ones, had my aunt's name on them so I sent those to her.
And, tomorrow I will return the cup my father won 72 years ago to him.
