I enter my 7th decade on October 3, 2013; the first woman in three generations to reach the age of 60. My mother died @ 52, my grandmothers @ 56 and 57. The thought of reaching this milestone has both frightened and sustained me as I’ve walked this unfamiliar path alone.
I was in my early teens when my grandmothers died and 32 when my mom passed away (and my son not even a year), so I have traveled most of my adult life without the support, advice and love of a mother or grandmother. I do remember and am grateful to them for the back scratches, the chocolate malts, and my first Holy Communion dress (and trendy pillbox hat!) and for always making me feel special and loved. Shout out to my Grandma Rose for her brilliant suggestion for my first name!!
I love you Florence (Tina), Rose and Elsie and I celebrate this milestone birthday with exuberance and gratitude in your honor. I wish you could have been here for more birthdays, I wish I could hear you say you’re proud of the woman I’ve become and I desperately wish that my son, your grandson and great-grandson could have known you (with all your talents and quirks and flaws) and felt your unconditional love. I take your hearts with me as I continue the journey of my life. And although you were not given the blessing of long lives, your inspiration and influence on me are truly never-ending.
