About Me

If you were to throw up your hands in exasperation and yell \"it's the story of my life,\" what would you be talking about?
The ongoing hyper-gentrification of NYC. Since 2014, I've been performing a show I wrote about it called "There Goes The Neighborhood." Four Stories. Two Centuries. One Neighborhood. You can see an excerpt of one of its stories here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sLcvsX3plA

Besides SMITH, I read stories at:
I'm more of a story performer than story reader and basically "Have stories, will travel." For bookings, send me a message. For appearances, go to https://www.michelecarlo.com/calendar

In bed I like to read:
Anytime! Anytime I have time, that is ;)

My favorite story of all time is:
The "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy. Yes, I admit it. I know there are so many other epics in this genre now, but for me, this is STILL the tops. For non-fantasy, five novels have always stayed with me: "Light in August," by William Faulker, "Remembrance Rock," by Carl Sandberg, "Pillars of the Earth," by Ken Follett, "House on Mango Street," by Sandra Cisneros and "The Brief, Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao," by Junot Diaz.

Right now, I'm reading:
I'm re-reading (for like the 10th time) "Please Kill Me," by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain. It's the definitive oral history of punk rock in NYC told by the people who were there. I just love, love LOVE this book! Am also currently reading "The War On Art," by Steven Pressfield and "Real Women Do It Standing Up," by my friend Leighann Lord, a funny, fierce and fearless stand-up comic and storyteller!

What six words would I tell my teen self if I could go back in time?
Sometimes it's not worth being right.

The song that encapsulates the soundtrack of my life is?
"You Can Make It If You Try"

If I could have one person read my writing on SMITH it would be?
Ava DuVernay
