Followed instructions, only to hear gainsay

It's so confusing, and a case of he wants things done one way, and his wife wants things another way. Technically they both have the right to tell me what they want. But what gets confusing is what I'm told by one person to do one thing, and then the other completely contradicts and argues (gainsay) with the first person I wanted. Then I'm at a standstill, and I don't know what to do. Take yesterday for instance. I was sent to the store and told to buy certain items, such as candy. The ladies husband came home early from work, and noticed that I was coming home with a bag full of junk food essentially. He turned to me, and almost as if I were in trouble, told me to stop buying that crap. Which is weird to me, since I was only following instructions from his wife to buy it. So what should I do in that situation. I'm told by one person to buy the stuff. And I'm told by the other person not to buy the stuff. Who do I listen to?
