Fired. Then remaining staff got cancer.

For reasons I'm still not clear about (although I have my suspicions) I was fired from a great-paying county job. The staff had it out for me even when they knew I was a team player and basically was doing a job really set up for two people. I was given the choice of being fired or offer my resignation, the latter of which I did of course. Most likely my "being let go" was a political/favoritism club move on their part.

Two ironies of this situation occurred: After my departure I found out my job was divided into two, because they realized it was just too difficult for one person to take on (gee, thanks.) Then, the two staff members who had it out for me each got a cancer diagnosis. Both of them had to take medical leaves of absence for several months, leaving the "macro"-managing boss alone with no staff.

I could be callous and revel in the retribution mode of a "told ya so" or "bad karma" moment, but I won't. It was just unfortunate all around.

My "Ides of March" moment contest.
