Her favorite diamonds? Light years away.

My daughter is growing up so quickly now. The whirl and buzz of a technologically advanced teenage life coupled with the drive for children to be older ever faster leaves me often concerned for her emotional well being. Our society's manic obsession with the attainment of material goods as the source of all happiness filters down to the very young, convincing them through colorful television ads and welcoming cereal characters. Despite my best efforts to ward off society's advances, no child is Teflon, so when she spent the evening star gazing with a friend, sans phone, iPad, etc., I could not have been more relieved. The girls (both fourteen) bounced up to me exclaiming that they had seen the dipper, Orion's belt, Venus... Their excitement was a delight to me and I eavesdropped as they set a date for another star gazing night during the break. They may not be Teflon, but their favorite diamonds are still twinkling brightly above, a million light years away.
