Congratulations to my parents on 28 years of marriage. 28 is the year of the orchid, so we bought one for them. My dad booked couple's massages and dinner at the restaurant they used to go to every year. It's a cold, rainy day, but he's planned out a nice, sweet evening together.
He walks in the door. He gets a call from my mom. Since 28 is the year of the orchid, she says, why don't they cancel the massages and dinner and go to the arboretum for lunch instead.
And I just want to tell her - Mom. You can't do that. You can't tell him to cancel the plans. It's not how it works. You have to let him do something nice for you, you just have to let him do it.
But she doesn't know how that works. In 28 years, she still doesn't know. And I feel so sad for both of them.
