Olivia and I got together with friends today. They picked the place: a dollar theater close to both our houses. It's a place I like, but not a place I have been for many years. Four years, four months, to be exact.
The last time I was there, I saw the movie Burn Before Reading. It was the night I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. It was the last date I ever went on with her dad.
So, as I drove up to the theater today, I admit I was shaky. I parked, and my heart beat a little faster. Sitting in the dark before the movie began, with my beautiful single-parented three and half year old, I got a little teary.
And then I got over it. We had so much fun with our new friends and when the movie ended we walked across the street to a coffee shop. By then, the theater was just a theater, not THE theater... and the power of that old memory faded into history.
Places hold memories, but they are still just places.
