This photo is from better days. The first day, actually, when Olivia got her first pet, a red beta fish that she picked out herself and named Sam-I-Am.

Today, he died. She stepped up to look into his tank and wish him a good day as we headed out the door (a daily ritual) and he was floating. She crumbled. She was inconsolable. She sobbed for an hour, buried under a blanket, hiding from the cruel world that would take her little red beta pal.

When she was ready to talk, we shared how much we loved him, what he meant to our family, how much he would be missed.

Then, she got up and moved on. She's mentioned him a few times today -- gotten teary.

It's a big loss. That first one.
