It's something I've noticed when I eat at Subway here in Sydney. The person serving you will invariably, if you are both male, call you 'mate'. I have no problem with the word, but would prefer being called the more respectful 'sir'. It makes me wonder whether Macca's just might be a better lunchtime option.
