i hear this one often, including on the radio (one could wish for a better command of the language from journalists...) the correct word is preventive. think about it: the root word for \"information\" is inform. we say \"it's important to get the information about the new policy out there\" but we DON'T say \"we need to informate the staff about the new policy.\"
