She was due on June 19 and born at 10:32 AM on July 4, 1996. I missed the fireworks that year. But what I got was so much more exciting!

As her birthday arrives, I can't help but think back to the little baby that was fed with a bottle because she always wanted to be looking out, face to the world, absorbed in the magic of light and activity and promise.

She was an early walker, an articulate 1 year old, a precocious toddler, and a curious Kindergartener. She has always had a book in her hand, but even with nose stuck in pages, she was looking into places far beyond our suburban home.

When she entered middle school, she survived our divorce, a move to the city, and a whole new life and she grabbed hold of it and made it her own. She made incredible friends, traded horseback riding lessons for art museums, and began telling her stories with a pencil and blank sketchbook and volunteering at the library.

This summer she turns 17. She will be a senior in the fall. College visits have already begun, and she is again, looking away from home and toward everything that is to come.

I am so excited for her. Her creativity and drive will influence the world. I know this. They already do.

Happy 17th Birthday to my first child, Victoria.
