Our local beaches were a complete disaster from the 4th of July festivities. A local non-profit organization called The Surfrider Foundation, organized a volunteer clean up from all the trash that was strewn about on the beaches, sidewalks, and streets. The foundation provided gloves, bags, and a piece of paper to jot down the random things that we find. Just myself alone, found 38 different items. From cigarette butts (I think I literally picked up hundreds), to marshmallows (again picked up hundreds), to balloons, fireworks, bottle caps, silly string, food wrappers, straws, plastic forks, fishing line, broken toys, etc. It was later reported that we picked up more than 1,000 pounds of marshmallows that were thrown in an annual marshmallow fight. Not only is this wasteful, but now our tax dollars are being spent to have city workers power wash the sticky sidewalks and streets. What a waste!
