Living moments you wanted to bottle.

This is one I later revisited and worked into poem; in this instance at least, the egg came before the chicken...

Living Moments

Gods make their own importance
Patrick Kavanagh

Living moments you wanted to bottle:
unplanned, unscripted, unprepared,
and threatening to pass you by,
you must live or die them.

These are the little instances
that make our lifetimes:
those seconds where true nature is forsaken
and instinct seizes our self-control – like adrenaline.

We feel our fear; and do it anyway,
only truly feeling said fear upon reflection:
we look back and wonder, “How did I do that?”
But the answer is irrelevant.

The moment has been lived,
bottled, banked and burnished in our memory:
there residing for our recall (or regret)
for us to live it all again.

Supposedly Achilles once said,
The Gods envy us because we are mortal;
but in these moments we are gods,
revising and rewriting our life-story –
making our own importance.
