Dementia made me a better artist.

Mom's OCD is getting worse. She gets a slip of paper every morning listing the day's activities. She reads it aloud, folds it up and puts it in her pocket. Checks her watch. Asks me what's next on the agenda. Each step, every 5 minutes. She thinks I'm here for activities. Couldn't get through to her that I'm here to see her. We'd go for a short walk, but she'd get anxious that she'd miss something. I worked on various art projects, which held her interest at brief intervals.... til I took out her college yearbook, found her picture and started to draw it. I've done portraits in the past and she's always asked, "Who's THAT supposed to be?" This time was different. She was enthralled. I turned on the TV to the Food Channel. Between seeing her younger self come to life and descriptions of gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, we got through 3 hours with no list, no watch checking. Tomorrow we will go shopping for a frame.
