At 17 I left school looking for adventure. I've always loved the sea and the smell of salt air. So in the fall of '69 I shipped out of the port of Montreal on a freighter bound for Morocco. The Portico was fully laden with #1 hard red spring wheat. I worked in the galley as the cook's assistant, mostly peeling vegetables and scrubbing pots and pans. We hit a typhoon off the coast of Africa. We were tossed about every which way and the ship started to list badly.
