Yesterday me and my boyfriend watched the movie Kinsey (excellent, inspiring, thought-provoking!) about the life and work of Alfred Kinsey. Kinsey, as I'm sure most of you know, was a pioneer in the field of human sexuality. His work in the 1940's and 50's known as The Kinsey Reports radically shifted the public consciousness about the scope of human sexuality.
The movie is about Kinsey's work but at the core is it also a love story about his relationship with his wife. Alfred Kinsey was originally a professor of entomology and zoology. His students affectionately called him "Prok" short for Professor Kinsey. Clara McMillen was one of his students. The two fell in love and married in 1921. Throughout their marriage Kinsey referred to his wife by the nickname "Mac" (an ode to her last name McMillen) and she continued to refer to him as "Prok".
Their relationship is truly inspiring. It is clear that the two admired each other intellectually and had a deep respect, kinship, and understanding for one another. When Kinsey began to explore the topic of sexuality Mac was an avid supporter and a research participant. Their own sexual forays helped inspire Kinsey's interest in sexuality and devotion to broadening the social understanding and acceptance of the range of sexual behavior.
Me and my boyfriend are at the beginning of what I think will be a long, happy life together. I’ll be the Mac to his Prok. Perhaps we'll even do some Kinsey-esque research in their honor...
