I misjudged. Students were absolutely right

Last week, I covered a colleague's algebra class when she was absent. She and I attended the same university at the same time, but I am a couple of years older than she is. The kids know this and were asking me what she was like in college. I didn't know here there, but we had many friends in common since we were both in the Greek System. So I told them that given what I knew about the people she hung around with, she was probably pretty fun and outgoing. They were in total disbelief. They said, "There's no way Ms. M had fun in college. She probably went to frat parties and handed out math packets." We all laughed and I suggested that we do a bit of mischief to test the theory. On her wall above some cabinets she has a quote written in chalk "Success is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration." I got the chalk and changed the 1 percent to 21 percent so the math would be off; thinking that it would be kind of funny and harmless. Wrong. When she returned on Monday she went full berserk saying that I 'graffitied and vandalized' her classroom. It looks like the students were right. She was probably as humorless and unfun then as she is now. I'll ask around at the next college alumni event to see if anyone still has one of the math packets she distributed.
