"Brother says Hello. Hooray, speech therapy!"

One of Oh_Skinny's recent memoirs reminded me of one of my favorite Emo Philips' bits, which reminded me of my all-time favorite quote. (I shaved some words to make it six. The original is "Well, my brother says Hello. So, hooray for speech therapy.")

I love this because my own brother, born with Fragile X Syndrome, and didn't even start speaking until he was 3 years old, is a true success story - thanks in great part to speech therapy. So it's funny AND it's true.

Emo is a remarkable comedian. He is, in my opinion, the king of timing. He uses paraprosdokians, which is such a great word for my vocabulary (if only I could pronounce it. Maybe I should investigate some speech therapy).

His humor is intellectual, irreverent, and inane. It's so dark, yet completely free of raunchiness or profanity. I've seen him perform live several times and have actually worn out cassettes listening to his recorded performances. Not to mention his work with Weird Al Yankovic. Be still my heart.

My family has always said there is no event that doesn't have a corresponding Emo quote.

When my sister gave a speech at her doctoral graduation (in Industrial Organizational Psychology) she quoted Emo by saying "“I used to think that the brain was the most wonderful organ in my body. Then I realized who was telling me this.”

If you have a chance, look up some of his work. Let yourself listen to his words (his falsetto tone of voice can be off-putting until you're "in the Emo know").

And you're welcome. =)
