My first full-time teaching job was at Columbine High School, 1994-1998. I took a leave-of-absence to complete my masters during the '98-'99 school year, thinking I'd return in September. When I heard the tragic news, I left my program and went back for the memorials and funerals. That summer I ended up moving away from Colorado entirely and never taught at Columbine again. I still have a lot of guilt around that decision, and the fact that I wasn't there in the first place.
