Winner! Six-Word Memoir Backstory Challenge #2 + Challenge #3 (New!) in Honor of Harold Ramis

For February’s Six-Word Memoir Backstory Challenge on Medium, we asked you to start with one of two Six-Word Memoirs: “What were once one, are two” by writer George Saunders; or “Love almost always leads to heartbreak” by celebrity divorce lawyer Raoul Felder. As is usually the case when we turn our attention to matters of the heart, we heard more stories of heartbreak then love.

Among a number of lovely and heartbreaking submissions we received, Ruby Brunton’s moving, modern “Skype Face” emerged as the winner. We’re delighted to send Ruby three books of her choice from the Six-Word book series  (including, of course, Six-Word Memoirs on Love & Heartbreak)—as well invite her to tell her story at a future Six Words Live story show.

Harold Ramis “Came, saw, conquered, had second thoughts.”

Now, we invite everyone to take part in our next challenge. Six-Word Backstory Challenge #3 is in honor of the late writer, director and actor Harold Ramis. Years ago, Harold was kind enough to write a Six-Word Memoir for our first collection, Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous & Obscure. His words—“Came, saw, conquered, had second thoughts”—were pure Ramis: Funny, self-deprecating, and one that all of us can relate to. With those six words as inspiration, we challenge you to tell us a story of a time you chased something, and the internal and external twists and turns involved. Write fiction or non-fiction, and you’re welcome to submit multiple stories; just write from the heart, and do so by April 7. See our home on Medium for more details.
